If you are looking for the pulse of Nairobi’s social commentary this week, all roads lead to Victoria Square, Riara Road. The renowned Circle Art Gallery has just launched a powerhouse double-feature that is already the talk of the town, featuring two of Kenya’s most influential artistic voices: Michael Soi and Evans Mbugua.
Both exhibitions opened on January 21 and are set to run through February 27, 2026.
Michael Soi: "Heaven Can Wait Two"
In Circle Art Gallery One, the legendary Michael Soi returns with his sharp, unmistakable satirical style. Known for his "visual diary" of Nairobi life, Soi’s latest collection, "Heaven Can Wait Two," doesn't hold back.
The vibrant, pop-art-inspired works tackle the complex contradictions of modern Kenya—from the hustle for economic survival and the nightlife "pleasure industry" to the political ironies that define our daily news cycles. Soi continues to be the mirror that Nairobi sometimes fears to look into, but can’t help but admire.
Evans Mbugua: "Untold Stories"
Across the hall in Circle Art Gallery Two, Paris-based Kenyan artist Evans Mbugua offers a more intimate, reflective experience with "Untold Stories." Mbugua’s work is a masterclass in layering and texture. In this exhibition, he reconstructs fragmented family histories, weaving together personal archives and historical research. The result is a series of "transgenerational narratives" that connect individual memories with Kenya’s broader colonial and post-independence journey. It is a soulful, visual exploration of who we were and who we are becoming.
Global Moves: Circle at "Black-Owned Galleries Now"
The excitement doesn't stop at Riara Road. Circle Art Gallery has also announced its participation in the international fair "Black-Owned Galleries Now," running from February 6 to March 6, 2026. This move further cements Circle’s reputation as a primary bridge between East African talent and the global art market.
