The lush, artistic suburb of Tigoni is currently playing host to one of the most significant solo exhibitions of the year. Banana Hill Art Gallery, a cornerstone of East African contemporary art, has officially opened its doors for "The African Horizons," a breathtaking collection by the celebrated Tanzanian artist Haji Chilonga.

Running from January 24 to March 10, 2026, this exhibition is a deep dive into the evolving identity of the continent through Chilonga’s signature bold strokes and evocative use of light.

Haji Chilonga, known for his ability to capture the "unseen" emotions of everyday life, has curated a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. The exhibition features standout pieces such as:

The Queen – A regal, large-scale acrylic on canvas that explores female power.

Walking On Locks – A vibrant piece reflecting modern African urbanism.

Kumekucha – A symbolic representation of a new dawn for the region.

Chilonga’s work in this series moves fluidly between semi-abstract forms and rich, detailed portrayals of community, cattle, and the "Free Market" spirit that defines the East African experience.

The Banana Hill Legacy

The choice of venue is no coincidence. Founded by Shine Tani and Rahab Shine (whose own recent exhibition, Trails of Africa Dawn, paved the way for this year's lineup), Banana Hill Art Gallery remains the beating heart of the local art scene. By hosting Chilonga, the gallery continues its mission of fostering cross-border artistic dialogue between Kenya and Tanzania.

For art collectors and soul-searchers alike, "The African Horizons" is a must-visit. The gallery offers a serene escape from the Nairobi bustle, where the artwork is perfectly complemented by the stunning views of the surrounding tea farms.

Dates: January 24 – March 10, 2026

Hours: Monday to Saturday (10:00 AM – 6:00 PM), Sunday (12:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Location: Limuru Road, Ruaka/Banana Hill, Nairobi.
